The iPhone 5s that made Tangerine

Researched story · 2015 · A camera at the center of culture

Sean Baker’s Tangerine brought mobile filmmaking to an international audience. The feature was shot on iPhone 5s handsets fitted with anamorphic adapters, using a mobile app to gain control over capture settings.

Illustrative camera editorial artwork; not an image of authenticated screen-used equipment
Editorial artwork. Not an authenticated photograph of the exact camera, movie prop or historical specimen.

The Academy Museum holds an actual iPhone 5s and anamorphic lens rig used on the production. That is rare, direct object-level evidence connecting a specific camera to a culturally important movie.

Even though CamerasObscuras emphasizes vintage hardware, this belongs in the archive: today’s ordinary device can become tomorrow’s historic motion-picture camera.

We link to contemporary interviews, museum collections, manufacturer histories and specialist cinematography records when available. Historical camera attribution and an item being screen-used are different claims.
