Exakta VX: buy the right specimen.
For the film connection, do not assume an Exakta VX listing includes the long Kilfitt lens seen in Rear Window.
Film and real-world operation
Uses standard 35mm film; shutter curtains and viewfinder condition deserve special attention.
When to walk away
A cheap body alone is not a complete recreation of the film prop or a proven working camera.
Eight checks before you bid
Verify front/top engravings: VX, Varex VX and later VX-family cameras can be confused.
Check left-hand shutter release, all shutter speeds and timer action.
Inspect cloth shutter curtains under backlight for pinholes.
Verify finder interchangeability and that installed prism/hood is complete.
Check Exakta bayonet lens mount; do not confuse it with M42 screw-mount cameras.
Look for cracked exterior covering and film door fit.
Examine rewind/transport mechanism and whether the film cutter operates safely.
Ask if its actual camera/lens combination has been film tested.
Ask the seller for evidence
Hello, I'm interested in your Exakta VX. Could you send recent photos of the exact camera, serial/model markings, and the lens and film compartment? Has it been film-tested or serviced, and can you describe any faults? In particular, please confirm: Verify front/top engravings: VX, Varex VX and later VX-family cameras can be confused; inspect cloth shutter curtains under backlight for pinholes. Please include what is actually included, any return terms, and the full shipping cost. Thank you.

Search current opportunities
Live eBay search results change. Look for a seller's own photos, exact item number, included accessories, tested functions and return terms.

01 / Its place in history
Why collectors care
The Exakta VX was a distinctive Dresden-built 35mm SLR. Its left-side shutter release and interchangeable viewfinder system make it stand out from later Japanese SLRs. The name appears under variations including Exakta Varex VX in different markets.
Its place in collector culture changed when James Stewart’s character L. B. Jefferies used a version of the Exakta VX in Hitchcock’s 1954 Rear Window. The oversized Kilfitt telephoto lens is part of the film identity, but do not assume a listing for the body includes the same lens or accessories.
Collecting the same model is different from owning an item used on a famous production. Look for documented provenance if a seller claims something more than model identity.

Inspection checklist
The right questions vary considerably between a silent-era cine camera and a still-film SLR. For this model, begin here:
Save or print this list
A good display camera is easier to obtain than a complete, mechanically sound Rear Window-style kit. Search separately for the Kilfitt lens and mounting pieces.
03 / Market research
Find an example, not an invented price
These searches open independent marketplace results. There is no claim that a particular camera is currently available or in working order.
